Welcome to Dr. Lori Ziolkowski’s Blog, chronicling her adventures in Antarctica. Dr. Ziolkowski recently received the Baillet Latour Antarctica Fellowship from the International Polar Foundation, which includes a prestigious €150,000 research grant. Her project “REMACA” aims to use the natural abundance of radiocarbon to study the rates of carbon accumulation and microbial activity. Below is a video produced by the International Polar Foundation giving a brief overview of Dr. Z’s journey. Please visit the Articles page to read in detail about preparation, research and day-to-day life in Antarctica.
One of the most exciting finds on her journey so far, has been the discovery of an open lake teaming with life. This is the first open lake observed in a region filled with frozen over lakes.
